Job Description


American Apparel is seeking candidates for Controllers position at its Continental European subsidiary. Controller is a key position in the companys European operations and is expected to provide leadership in the areas of local financial accounting and reporting, internal controls, tax accounting and financial systems implementations. In this capacity, the Controller is required to supervise all local bookkeeping and reporting activities across the branches and companies of American Apparels Continental European subsidiary and work with the Companys corporate accounting team to report local results for consolidation. Controller is also expected to assist the European Financial Officer and the corporate financial planning team in preparation of local financial planning and forecasting models. The position also oversees aspects of the local treasury management function and requires design, implementation and monitoring of local policies, procedures, internal controls and compliance matters.

This position is ideal for an ambitious, experienced professional who seeks an opportunity to join an entrepreneurial and rapidly-growing public company in an influential and visible management role at the Companys Continental European subsidiary. Position reports to the European Financial Officer.


RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Lead the local financial accounting and reporting team while ensuring adherence to US GAAP and German GAAP for local statutory reporting.
  • Develop and implement consistent bookkeeping and reporting practices in order to facilitate timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Work closely with the corporate accounting team to facilitate preparation and assembly of a comprehensive local financial reporting package as required by corporate headquarters.
  • Provide timely feedback and resolution to corporate inquiries related to financial information; facilitate accelerated financial closing and reporting.
  • Oversee and review preparation and assembly of local consolidated financial statements including retail store profit and loss statements.
  • Prepare comparative analysis of local actual results versus budgets and/or projections.
  • Prepare comprehensive quarterly financial reporting package as required by corporate headquarters for SEC reporting and investor communications.
  • Assemble local statutory and tax reports.
  • Prepare thirteen week cash flow and capital expenditure forecasts; perform detail variance analysis for local forecasted versus actual cash flow results.
  • Develop and implement annual operating budgets.
  • Develop and implement capital budgets including preparation of feasibility/ROI analysis for all capital projects and potential new store openings.
  • Prepare and monitor store construction budgets, including pre-opening costs.
  • Assist with treasury management, including managing liquidity position, managing local trade credit, lease financing needs and hedging foreign currency exposure.
  • Develop and oversee compliance with accounting policies and procedures.
  • Lead design, implementation and monitoring of internal controls.
  • Act as point person for SOX implementation efforts in Europe; mitigate and remediate any control deficiencies.


    Requirements


  • 7 to 10 years experience in auditing, financial accounting and reporting capacity. The ideal candidate will have several years of work experience in public accounting, as well as several years in a more operationally focused setting either in finance or accounting role within a company.
  • Candidate must have excellent knowledge of GAAP
  • Strong academic record with an undergraduate degree from a reputable undergraduate school
  • Candidates with a US CPA license or a German equivalent will be at an advantage; MBA is helpful but not required.
  • Excellent quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, including significant relevant experience with financial consolidations and reporting. Candidates experienced with consolidations and reporting of multi-divisional entities, as well as companies with retailing operations and significant international operations will be at an advantage.
  • Must have outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Must have excellent project management skills (workflow planning and management, people management and coaching, etc.).
  • Must have positive attitude, confident demeanor, and be willing to tackle challenging tasks under tight deadlines this is a fast-paced, start-up, entrepreneurial environment where people at all levels are expected to "roll up their sleeves" and exhibit a "can do" spirit.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Experience with financial accounting and reporting systems (i.e. ERP and business intelligence systems) is helpful.
  • Must be fluent in both English and German. Knowledge of other languages is helpful.
  • Given the companys global operations, some international travel may be expected.
